How to Install a Rocker Switch on Your Boat

Installing a rocker switch right onto the panel of your boat can add a professional touch to any linear actuator project that you’ve got in mind. It’s not just adding a sleek look, but it’s giving you a convenience way to access any rocker switch.

You don’t need to be a professional to install a rocker switch for a linear actuator on your boat. If you have the space on your panel, it can be done in a few hours. All you’ll need is a few tools, your switch and some wiring.
What you’ll need for this project:
Rocker switch
• Wiring
• Jig saw
• File
• Drill

Is there a spot already?

If you already have a spot where the rocker switch can fit, you’ll just have to insert the rocker switch and start the wiring. If not, you’ll have to create a spot where the switch will fit.

Find the space and measure

Cabin Start off by finding an adequate spot on your control panel. Check in behind the panel and make sure you have enough room for the wiring. Measure the size of the rocker switch and draw the shape onto the panel with a ruler. Double check your measurements before you start cutting.

You might find it easier to create a template with a piece of paper and trace it with a permanent marker.

Cut the Shape

Using a jig saw, cut the shape out of the panel. If you don’t have any experience with a jig saw, you might want to get someone who does. This part can be very tricky.

Fit the Panel

Insert the panel and make sure that it will fit your switch. If it doesn’t quite fit, you can use a file to sand down the lines and edges.

If it does fit, the next step will depend on the type of switch you have.

Marking the switch

If you have a switch that’s fastened by screws, mark your holes on each end of the panel. Other switches might not have need of screws, and all you’ll need to do is push the switch into the panel.

You might want to use glue to give it some extra security.

You can now wire up the actuator to the rocker switch. If you need help with the wiring portion, there are a number of informative videos online that will explain this in detail. After you’ve wired up the rocker switch, you should be good to go!
